Few things are more evocative of Victorian Britain than its criminals; they are, together with railways, gas lamps and swirling fog, vital ingredients in any Victorian melodrama. The truth, however, was often stranger, more thrilling and more horrifying than fiction.
In this book, four eminent crime historians reveal the realities of this aspect of Victorian life, illuminating not just the criminals and their victims, but also the policemen, forensic scientists and others who rubbed shoulders with the nineteenth-century underworld. Notorious crimes – the Road Hill Murder, the Balham Mystery and Jack the Ripper – stand alongside long-forgotten, neglected cases; the most shocking and terrifying cases appear next to everyday horrors, some stunning and some merely sad. This unique work of reference deserves a place on every true crime reader’s bookshelf.

One of the hardest things to do in true crime is to write for an audience that is comprised of longtime readers and people new to the field. Writers may satisfy veterans by merely alluding to "canonical" cases without much detail, which would turn off those who are unaware of those cases. Or they may write in-depth about those cases to the consternation of old hands who are searching for something novel. The crew behind The A-Z of Victorian Crime have bridged that gap marvelously.Set up (as the title indicates) as a compendium of criminal cases from the Victorian era, the book They've included a myriad of cases I'd never heard of after 30 years of reading about Victorian literature and crime, while giving great service to those cases familiar to many along with references for further reading for those who wish to learn more about particular cases--not something that many books do.
I was particularly impressed and happy to see nods to venerable crime writers like Johnathan Goodman, Richard Altick and William Roughead who laid much of the groundwork for today's crime writers, yet are sadly neglected in favor of the prolific but dry serial-killer-of-the-month author. The authors of the Victorian A-Z strive for a vibrant style that gives the reader an emotional as well as scholarly view of each case--no mean feat in entries that do not go beyond a few pages apiece. For instance, after recounting the case of Mary Pearcey, who murdered the wife and child of her lover, M.W. Oldridge adds that, while guilty, Pearcey was perhaps not judged fairly due to her documented mental impairment. Oldridge writes that "no injustice was done, but yet one is left with the uncomfortable feeling that Mary remained somehow misunderstood." Contrast this with those who not only vilify an obviously mentally unbalanced person but also add her to the roster of laughable Jack the Ripper suspects merely on the basis of her 1.committing murder and 2. being alive at the time of the Ripper murders. This books' more nuanced look at Pearcey typifies the authors' approach to each case and is a welcome respite from the "Shocking Murders! Gruesome Crimes in History" line of true-crime writing.
The book is so engaging, it's easy to overlook that it's also meticulously researched. Any fan of true-crime, particularly of the era that so fascinates many of us, should add this book to their collection alongside Griffiths, Atlick, Roughead, et al.
